　　1. Reward

　　1)Many schools use rewards as one part of their school-wide effort to boost student achievement and test scores.大多数学校用各种奖励作为鼓励学生提高学习成绩的手段。

　　2)Do rewards motivate students？ Some say no， but many teachers think they do.奖励真的能激发学生吗？有人说不能，但很多老师认为可以。

　　3)External rewards are helpful in encouraging students to come to school， do their homework， and focus on classroom activities.外在的奖励在鼓励学生上学，做家庭作业和参与课堂活动方面很有帮助。

　　4)In stead of providing a specific reward that some students may not be motivated by or enjoy， money can be used to purchase many things. To some people， more money may equate to a new car. To others， it may represent a vacation.不像别的一些奖励，学生可能不会被激发或者喜欢，钱能够用来买很多东西。对有些人来说，更多的钱就是一辆新车，对另外一些人来说，钱可以用来去度假。

　　2. Motivate

　　1)One of the problems with using money to motivate students is that the motivation does not last.用钱来奖励学生的问题在于，这种激励不会持久。

　　2)Recognition is typically more effective at motivating students over the long term.长期看来，对某人的认可是对学生来说更有效的奖励。

　　3)Another drawback of using money to motivate students is that it is costly.另外一个用钱作为奖励方式的弊端是，这很费钱。

　　4)Many effective motivational techniques do not involve money. For example， giving a student recognition in front of others or giving extra time off might work just as well.很多有效的激励手段并不和钱有关。比如，给一个学生当众表扬，或者给他额外的假期会更好。

　　3. Initiative

　　1)He acted on his own initiative and wasn&rsquo；t following orders.他是主动这么做的，并不是奉命行事。

　　2)Don&rsquo；t ask me what you should do all the time. Use your initiative！别老问我你该干什么，积极主动点儿！

　　3)Giving money can encourage and promote initiative.给钱能鼓励并促进一个人的主动性。

　　4. Drive

　　1)He will do very very well---he has tremendous drive.他会干得很出色的--他干劲冲天。

　　2)He lacks the competitive drive needed to succeed.他缺乏成功所必须具备的竞争劲头。

　　5. Worship

　　1)The worship of money leads to greed.对金钱的崇拜会导致贪婪。

　　2)worship money崇拜金钱

　　3)a worshipper of money金钱崇拜者

　　4)Always giving money as a reward may lead to money worship.经常把给钱当作奖励可能会导致拜金主义。

　　6. Performance

　　1)He got top marks for overall academic performance.他因为在学业上的总体表现而获得高分。

　　2)Students&rsquo； intrinsic motivation is the most important factor in boosting academic performance.学生内在的动力才是提高学业表现的最重要的因素。
