例一:Under very cold conditions, rocks can be shattered by ice and frost. Glaciers may cut out valleys, carrying with them huge quantities of eroded rock debris. █ In dry areas the wind is the principal agent of erosion. █ It carries fine particles of sand, which bombard exposed rock surfaces, thereby wearing them into yet more sand. █ Even living things contribute to the formation of landscapes. █Tree roots force their way into cracks in rocks and, in so doing, speed their splitting.

Under different climatic conditions, another type of destructive force contributes to erosion.

  例二:

The subjects of the paintings are mostly animals. The paintings rest on bare walls, with no backdrops or environmental trappings. Perhaps, like many contemporary peoples, Upper Paleolithic men and women believed that the drawing of a human image could cause death of injury, and if that were indeed their belief, it might explain why human figures are rarely depicted in cave art. Another explanation for the focus on animals might be that these people sought to improve their luck at hunting.█ This theory is suggested by evidence of chips in the painted figures, perhaps made by spears thrown at the drawings. █ But if improving their hunting luck was the chief motivation for the paintings, it is difficult to explain why only a few show signs of having been speared. █ Perhaps the paintings were inspired by the need to increase the supply of animals. Cave art seems to have reached a peak toward the end of the Upper Paleolithic period, when the herds of game were decreasing. █

Therefore, if the paintings were connected with hunting, some other explanation is needed.

例三:Scientists have known for some time that certain plants, called hyper accumulators, can concentrate minerals at levels a hundredfold or greater than normal. █ A survey of known hyper accumulators identified that 75 percent of them amassed nickel, cobalt, copper, zinc, manganese, lead, and cadmium are other minerals of choice. █Hyperaccumulators run the entire range of the plant world. █ They may be herbs, shrubs, or trees. █ Many members of the mustard family, spurge family, legume family, and grass family are top hyper accumulators. Many are found in tropical and subtropical areas of the metals may afford some protection against plant-eating insects and microbial pathogens.

Certain minerals are more likely to be accumulated in large quantities than others.
