　　托福独立写作练习题:

　　Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Although science and technology will continue to improve, the most significant improvement for the quality of people’s lives have already taken place.

　　Progress of science and technology has brought us many changes, and they affect our quality of life dramatically. Some people believe that the most significant improvements have already taken place, and there will be no revolution in the future at all. This is obviously an overstatement. Actually, although our technology today is quite advanced, we are still facing many problems. What is more, we even have to deal with new problems caused by technology progress.

　　Advanced technology allows people to live longer, so an increasing population consumes the limited natural resources on this planet at a higher speed. This gives raise to many problems like starvation, unemployment, and even wars for resources like water and petroleum. The recent wars in our world had many things to do with such resources and wars take away people’s lives and destroy the happiness of the rest. Unfortunately, since our technology is not advanced enough to create resources, such conflicts are unlikely to be finished and they may become more serious in the future. Also, the increasing population makes our cities much more crowded than in the past, and graduates from colleges and universities have slimmer changes to get good jobs as well because there are too many of them but so limited positions. Such problems cannot be solved in the near future as well.

　　Advanced technology also creates new issues, among which the decreasing interpersonal communication in real world is the most serious one. People today are captivated by information from the internet, spending most of their time on twitter or facebook, paying much less attention to their family members and friends. By the time when the Internet was born, the problem already appeared. It was just not that serious then, but as means of online communication has developed so rapidly, it becomes much worse and more obvious.

　　In the past, people were only captivated by websites, but now they can even communicate with people on the other side of the world by using their cell phones. We often see a group of people who sit at a table, looking at the screens of their phones, minding their own businesses, having no interactions with people right beside them. Such things are unlikely to be changed in our lifetime as well because technology will only make online communication easier.

　　Technology is like a sword of two blades and it brings us both blessings and curses. Understanding the huge benefits it provides, it also necessary to know that it can lead to unpleasant results, and such results cannot be easily eliminated. On the journey to a better future, we human still have a long way to go.
