　　While most cultures are forced to farm the same soils year after year, Amazonian cultures, because of the Amazon’s flooding, were supplied with new fertile soil to the intensively farmed riverbanks with no effort on the farmers’ part—as waters rose, silt from the Andes mountains deposited itself on the broad floodplain, and as the floods receded, the virgin sediment was planted with seed.

　　As the Amazon flooded each year, new fertile soil was deposited on the intensively farmed riverbanks and then planted as the floods receded.
