In recent years, tourism has gradually increased in popularity with numerous travel agencies being set up around the globe. Going on package tours seems to be the first choice for those who are short of traveling experience. Undoubtedly, joining a group led by a tour guide helps travelers avoid unwanted troubles during the trip. Nevertheless, from my standpoint, signing up for a guided tour is not the best style of traveling.

To begin with, the lack of freedom and tight schedules considerably stifles the experience of traveling. What is supposed to be the original intention for all tourists? The answer definitely lies in relaxation. However, in most cases, the tour guide is acting like a shepherd, pushing a group of obedient tourists around in a hurry. They don't have enough time to enjoy the beautiful scenery during the journey or to feel totally relaxed. Normally, there are so many destinations included on the timetable that the tour guide seems to deal with errands mechanically. This hustled group is rushingfrom one crowded spot to another. It is hard to imagine what could be gained from such a busy and tiring traveling experience.

Furthermore, tourists face the possibility of making unwanted purchases during a trip because it is one of the underlying rules in the tourism industry that tour guide charges commission fees from certain tourist sites, restaurants and shops. Thus, driven by personal profits, some tour guides may lead the group to these places and try their best to encourage spending. Souvenirs are always higher in price and meals are overly expensive. Consequently, travelers often suffer additional financial losses. A real life experience that provides a vivid example is this: I once joined a guided tour to Hainan, a most popular scenic spot that boasts appealing seashores and delicious seafood. During the tour, our guide took us to a shop selling marine products and succeeded in persuading several tourists to buy goods there. Later I found out that similar items in other shops were much cheaper.

There are many other interesting and fashionable ways to travel besides joining a tourist group. For instance, anindividual may search for companions on the Internet www.lvye.com, a famous travel website in China, which provides a rich source of information posted by experienced travelers who are planning trips and inviting partners. Traveling alone in a peaceful place can be another appealing choice. No matter what you choose,joy,freedom and relaxation ought to be the expectations.

To sum up, an enjoyable guided tour depends largely on the credibility of the travel agency and their tour guides. Both quality and security are of vital importance to all travelers. Whatever type of tour one chooses, full preparations ought to be made before the journey begins. Judging from those hidden shortcomings in a guided tour, we could conclude that it may not be the best way to travel.
