Unlike older generation, children today become familiar with computers at a very early age. Tactfully-designed computer games are extremely popular among the young. Supported by digital technology and multimedia, such games are leading children into a magical wonderland. Many parents complain that playing computer games is totally a waste of time and so never allow their children to use them. As far as I am concerned, not all computer games are harmful.

Admittedly, it is not advisable for children to be overly obsessed with computer games. Most computer games boast a large number of elements that are dramatically appealing to the hearts of children. True-to-life visual and sound effects combined with smartly-designed plots and fascinating game modes allow participants to vividly experience the magical power of the electronic world. Owing to these superior characteristics, most computer games are able to tie an addicted youngster to the chair before thecomputer screen for a long time. Without doubt, it will not only do harm to a child's health and schoolwork, but also waste much valuable time that could be spent engaging in more meaningful activities. Concrete evidence can be seen in many families nowadays. The sevenyear-old son of my cousin used to be so addicted to computer games that he would consume half of his weekend in front of the computer. As time went by, he became nearsighted and his studies were also negatively affected. As soon as his parents realized the potential threat of computer games, they had to set strict rules that prohibit their child from playing themtoo often.

However, in spite of the side effects computer games bring to children, there are also some positive qualities hidden in them that could possibly be beneficial. To illustrate, some puzzle games are designed to train a person's logical thinking and urge him to use his wits. Children are at an age of mental development. Using such games may be a good approach to exercise the brain. With this in mind, parents could allow their children to spend some time solving interesting puzzles on the computer. Inaddition, some educational computer games familiarize children with practical skills or useful knowledge. A popular game named RichMan, for example, guides players to plan and arrange incomes and investments intelligently. Young children can obtain a primary understanding of what financial transactions mean.

As a matter of fact, it is the responsibility of parents to manage and control the time their children spend playing computer games and help themselect the most suitable types of games. In most cases, children are too young to have enough awareness of time. They are also unable to distinguish between good and bad. With the support and guidance from their parents, children are likely to benefit much fromusing computer games.

Therefore, even though being addicted to computer games does harm to children's health and interrupts their schoolwork, there is no need to label this form of leisure activity totally meaningless. Through some computer games, children can be offered an opportunity to exercise their brains and train themselves to become smarter and more capable. As long as they are under the guidance andsupervision of parents, children should be allowed to play some computer games.
