University education constitutes a most crucial stage ina person's life. Not only does it mark the startingline ofadulthood, but it also prepares students for futurechallenges in society. More advanced knowledge is beinggained and practical skills are being cultivated in theprocess. In order to make higher learning more effective,some people propose that colleges should require thestudents to take at least one course on foreign cultures. I amin favor of such a motion.

Firstly, learning foreign cultures broadens the students'global vision. In effect, the world today is a coherent wholewith strengthened connections between different countries.Not a single nation should be secluded. As the major forceto construct the future world, university students arebearing inescapable responsibilities. An open mind is thebest way to assimilate essences of different cultures andintelligently utilize them whenever it is necessary. Moreover,with the arrival of the brand new era of information,globalization has made everyone a villager in a smallerworld. With this regard, trans-cultural communicationsindeed bring about a promising future for the society and itssocial members. Thereafter, it is highly imperative foruniversity students to take courses on foreign cultures.

Secondly, learning foreign cultures also helps youngadults obtain a more objective view about the real situationsin their home countries. Su Shi, an ancient Chinese poet,once presented his opinion stating, "I don'tknow whatMount Lu really looks like, just because I am within therange of it." Such a notion is simple in words, yet extremelyprofound in meaning. It vividly demonstrates the fact thatonly from a different angle could a person obtain the reallooks of his own surroundings. The same is true with thesocial reality nowadays. Through the comparison betweendifferent customs and cultures, students are enabled toknow their native cultures better.

Last but not least, former prejudice andmisunderstanding could be eliminated by taking suchlessons. Without a good command of foreign cultures,students may only have obscure conceptions about theoutside world. Misleading information from the media alsocovers the truth. Only in the class could the real facts begrasped and comprehended. Thus, the biased attitude heldpreviously can be corrected, which paves the way for moreextensive cooperation between countries and also helpspreserve world peace.

To conclude, chaining together all the meritselaborated above, we are completely convinced thatrequiring students to study foreign cultures is a beneficialchoice. The modern society has set higher standard forthose who are to construct the world in the near future.Faced with overwhelming challenges, each individual shouldbe well equipped with a vast range of knowledge and abroadened mind.
