During the process of marching toward success, a command of ideas and concepts plays a significant part. Meanwhile, a number of other important factors should also be taken into account, including the ability to understand facts. Currently, the increasingly pragmatic society seems to attach more importance to tangible facts over abstract ideas. Under the circumstance, some argue that it is more important for students to learn facts because the application of facts is more relevant in daily lives. However, I tend to believe that understanding ideas and concepts is much more important.

To begin with, comprehending concepts lays a solid foundation for the understanding of the rationales behind the facts. To illustrate, almost the occurrence of every fact results from the interactions of a series of intricate concepts. Students will be misled if they only concern about facts. On the contrary, after grasping concepts, students can contemplate on how to explain facts and thus learn spontaneously. For example, I used to be puzzled by the fact that fish can swim. Thanks to biology lessons, I learned the concepts about how muscles, bones, fins and swim bladders coordinate to help fish to swim in different water layers, and thus I developed a keen interest in science. This exemplifies that learning ideas can help students to understand facts and even trigger students’ curiosity.

Furthermore, it is indispensable to understand ideas, which help to develop students’thinking abilities and enhance their competitiveness. To be specific, with ample exposure to a wide range of views, students are more likely to develop the habit to think from different perspectives, thus forming more comprehensive and objective judgments. Critical thinking and the ability to innovate new ideas are highly valued at present. Researchers at China Academy of Social Sciences conducted a survey in ten prestigious companies. They drafted a list of questions centering on reasons why these employees found ideal jobs upon graduation. Over half of them mentioned the ability to think via the acquisition of ideas and concepts. Accordingly, understanding ideas can cultivate the skills to think critically so as to make them more competitive.

Undeniably, some pragmatic dissenters may claim that facts play a vital role in bringing about tangible gains due to their practical application. There is no doubt that the society functions based on the known facts such as the composition of air and the succession of the seasons. However, the uniformity of facts cannot be guaranteed, so some facts may mislead human beings about the prediction of the future. Therefore, it is advisable to understand the ideas and concepts behind facts to explore the yet unknown facts and make predictions. Hence, the merits for students to understand ideas clearly outweigh those they could reap from learning mere facts.

In conclusion, there is every reason to believe that understanding ideas and concepts is more essential for students to comprehend facts and foster abilities to think.
