托福独立写作试题

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:

Some primary and middle schools prefer to adopt a policy to reduce the attendance days from five to four days a week while increasing extra at least 90 minutes at school.

托福独立写作范文

In recent years, there has been a heated debate over the length of school days for primary and middle school students. Although some schools have a preference for limiting the attendance days from five to four days a week while extending school hours, I hold the notion that such a policy may have negative effects on both schoolchildren and their parents.

To begin with, it is universally acknowledged that the idea of a 4-day school week and longer school hours may harm students’ academic performance. Obviously, the main reason is that if Friday is required to be part of the weekend, there will be 3 days that schoolchildren will get to stay off every week, which means that plenty of students will be easy to forget what they learn in the classroom once they are not required to do additional exercises during the weekend. Additionally, students at a young age are difficult to concentrate for long hours, so they can not only have less access to knowledge in the extended hours but also be fed up with learning. Thus, the policy should not be adopted since it may result in a dramatic slowdown in students’ academic achievement. However, a normal 5-day school week without extending school hours is consistent with students’ biological rhythm for learning, meaning that they can acquire new knowledge easily and solidly. The story happening to Zoe could perfectly prove the statement mentioned above. Before her school changed the schedule to 4 days a week, she felt that achieving good academic performance was not difficult for her since she could focus on learning when she was at school and a 2-day weekend without doing any exercise was not long enough to make her forget what she had learnt before. However, after a 4-day schedule with longer school hours was adopted last semester, she always felt tired and was hard to concentrate during the extended hours, so she didn’t understand the teacher completely. A longer weekend imposed a further negative influence on her learning since she almost forgot what her teacher taught during the weekdays. Thus, the policy of a 4-day school week and longer school hours should not be encouraged to implement because it can have a bad impact on students’ academic results.

Besides, the move from a 5-day school week to a 4-day week with extended days may put full-time working parents to great inconvenience. Apparently, the primary reason is that if schoolchildren are not allowed to go to school on Friday, two parents who both need to work 5 days a week will be in a dilemma over whether to drop a day at work to look after the kids or to spend a fortune on finding a reliable babysitter. Hence, shortening the school week is not sensible due to the fact that working parents may be stuck for childcare or worry about their kids when they are at work. By contrast, since most full-time working parents have two rest days a week, current 5-day schedules can alleviate the childcare burdens for them. Taking Frank as an example. Frank’s school decided to reduce school days to 4 days a week this semester. Even though Frank was happy to have the chance to cultivate his hobbies including skateboarding on Friday, his parents suffered a lot from this policy since as full-time employees, they didn’t have time to accompany their son on the extra free day. Not to disappoint Frank, his mother ended up quitting her job to take care of her son. However, Alex and his parents were on the same schedule because of the 5-day school week, which means that his working parents didn’t have to make a difficult choice between childcare and their job. Therefore, the idea of shorter school days a week with longer weekends should not be adopted owing to the fact that it may bring inconvenience to full-time working parents.

In conclusion, I don’t think that the adopting a 4-day week with an extra free day is a wise decision because students’ school performance may be affected negatively and their parents may also suffer since they don’t have a day off to look after their children.
