托福独立写作机经

机经试题

Do you agree or disagree with the following view?

In many places, it has been typical for teachers of high school students(aged 14-18) to lecture or lead a discussion while the students listen and take notes for most of the school day. However, this is not an effective way to prepare students for careers in the modern workplace. A better way to do that is for teachers to spend most of the school day on student-led discussions (in which students frequently present their ideas and discuss them with the class) and project-based activities (in which students do their own research and work together while the teacher is available to help them as needed).

Inevitably, the way to educate students seem to be the issue concerning teachers most these days. Although it is fully convinced that students should follow each step of teachers, from my perspective, class discussion is indeed an effective approach for students’ learning.

To begin with, it is widely acknowledged that students highly involved in the discussion can better master the knowledge. The reason is that only when students take initiative to think about the questions and summarize the knowledge based on their own understanding, can they effectively take part in the discussion and exchange ideas with partners. Therefore, in the process of discussion, they can further understand the knowledge and master it better. David’s story could best illustrate the mentioned point. David, a high school student, was not fond of geography and even considered it a headache sometimes because he could not remember the detailed knowledge, such as the names of the seven continents and four oceans, which were repeated again and again by the geography teacher who spent most of the class time lecturing. However, things started to change when the teacher organized more discussion in the class. David found it easier to remember the annoying knowledge since he had to think, summarize and then exchange ideas about the features of each continent with partners. Therefore, it was quite natural for him to remember the names of the seven continents and even the position, features and climate of each continent after the discussion. Undoubtedly, getting more involved in class discussion can better help students to master knowledge.

In addition, it can not be denied that students would be more concentrated in the class discussion while leading these classroom activities. The reason is that in order to present their ideas to other classmates in the discussion, students need to think about the questions asked by the teacher independently, organize the ideas in their minds and then convey the ideas by words, which means that they must be concentrated enough to fulfil the tasks mentioned above. Conversely, if students only listen to the lectures delivered by the teacher, it is much easier for students to distract from the class because what they need to do is to listen instead of thinking while the teacher is lecturing. There is no better example of Susan, who is a high school teacher. Susan used to spend most of the class time lecturing and found that her students were easy to distract from the class while she was lecturing. Several times, Susan disappointingly found that her students could not answer the questions she just illustrated, so she decided to change the form of her class into group discussion. To her surprise, her students could follow all of her questions and paid full attention to the discussion topics. One of her students admitted that he was able to focus on the class when getting involved in the class discussion. Therefore, it is evident that students can concentrate on the class if they participate in the class discussion.

To sum up, it is no doubt that class discussion is a more effective approach for students’ learning because students can concentrate themselves in the class and have deeper impression of the knowledge.
