A university is going to establish a requirement for all the students in the university. Do you agree or disagree with the decision that the university will choose public speaking as the requirement for all students?

Seemingly, ccollege curriculum determines what kind of education students will get. Some people believe that all graduates should take public speaking courses no matter what major they are. From my perspective, this is quite necessary.

First, it is undoubted that taking public speaking courses can be instrumental in improving students’ academic performance of other curricula. Nowadays, a growing number of teachers choose presentations as a form to check students’ understanding of specific knowledge since they attach more importance to students’ overall ability. Therefore, how well students deliver a presentation is directly related to their final grades. By taking public speaking courses, students are able to master more public speaking skills, thus enabling them to present the knowledge to the whole class effectively and efficiently. Consequently, they are very likely to earn teachers’ approval and get a better grade. My friend Joey can be a good case in point. Joey was too shy to speak in front of others, even in a small group. However, everything changed since he took a public speaking class last semester. The presentations about the difference between meiosis and mitosis he gave in biology class was so fluent and clear. Not surprisingly, he got a very high score in the presentation and an A+ as the final grade. As a result, there is every reason to believe that taking public speaking courses can promote students’ overall performance in school.

Second, public speaking courses can increase success in graduates’ future professional life. It is generally acknowledged that speaking confidently and authoritatively can be a great competitive edge in job hunting since most companies nowadays value people who can speak confidently and logically under pressure, which can be an excellent skill when it comes to dealing with difficult clients. The public speaking skills learned in these courses allows students to become comfortable and proficient at speaking loudly, which will boost their confidence and self-esteem to a large extent. What’s more, being good at public speaking means they know how to present information to others effectively. This means that the better a person can present information, the more credible he or she will become to the clients or colleagues. Therefore, graduates who have taken such courses are more likely to get a decent job and climb the corporate ladder in a short notice.

To sum up, it is a very smart move to make the public speaking course mandatory since it will not only improve students’ overall academic performance, but also benefit their future career.
