　　Looking back to my school years, our headmaster always encouraged us to study hard and make progress day by day. Without doubt, if one refuses to march ahead, he is likely to lag behind. It must be a commonly-cherished aimfor all to make progress because no one desires to be behind.Nevertheless, some side effects of progress have shown up in many aspects of our daily life. From some perspectives,progress is not always good.

　　First, progress in industries has become a major contributor to pollution problems. With a higher degree of industrialization, an increasing number of factories are being built. Those factories established near heavilypopulated areas might release industrial waste into waterways in the area. As a consequence, that water can be seriously polluted. What's worse, some of the pollutants can be poisonous. Meanwhile, industrial gases are released into the air fromfactory chimneys. Thus, the air can also be severely polluted. Such potential hazards can threaten the health of residents and disturb the ecological balance in affectedareas. There have been many news reports about nuclear power stations polluting water and air and causing fatal illnesses.

　　In addition, some social progress has forced modern citizens to live under overwhelming pressure. Admittedly, a fast pace of life has become a feature of modern society.Most working people face unprecedented workplace challenges and competition. Additionally, in the face of rising housing and fuel prices and other daily necessities,many people have no other way but to work day and night.Seldom can they afford enough time to totally relax. Many have to give up much time that should be spent with their families. This is a huge sacrifice. Needless to say, heavy burdens imposed by social progress have deprived many people of the ability to enjoy life.

　　The progress of information technology has also posed many problems. To illustrate, the prevalence of the Internet h a s given rise to the spread of online rumors, which considerably undermines social security and stability.Frequent cyber crimes have roused negative public attention, and result in diversified frauds and networkhacking attacks. Without doubt, these are doing great harm to the normal interests of ordinary citizens.

　　To conclude, everything in the world is double-sided and progress is no exception. In spite of the fact that progress has brought numerous benefits to most people, we should never neglect to consider its negative impacts and act to mitigate them.

首先，工业进步已经成为导致污染问题的主要因素。随着工业化程度的提高，越来越多的工厂被建立起来。那些建于人口聚居区附近的工厂可能将工业废物排入此地区的水道。因此，当地水质可能遭到严重污染。更糟糕的是，有些污染物含有毒素。与此同时，工业废气从工厂的烟囱中排入空气，导致严重的空气污染。这些潜在的危害威胁着居民的健康，并且破坏了该受污染地区的生态平衡。有关核电站污染水和空气并引发致命疾病的事件已频频被新闻曝光。

此外，某些社会进步迫使现代居民生活在难以抗拒的压力之下。不可否认，快节奏的生活是现代社会的特征。大多数劳动者面临着空前的职场挑战和竞争。另外，在飞涨的房价、油价和其他生活必需品价格面前，很多人别无选择，只能夜以继日地工作。他们很少有充足时间完全放松身心，而且还得放弃与家人共处的时间。这的确是很大的牺牲。毋庸置疑，社会进步带来的沉重负担已经夺走了很多人享受生活的能力。

信息技术的进步也带来了很多问题。例如，互联网的普及引发了网络谣言的泛滥，这极大地损害了社会安全与稳定。频繁的网络犯罪在公众中也产生了消极影响，并导致多种形式的诈骗和网络黑客攻击。不容置疑，这些都对普通百姓的根本利益造成巨大危害。

总之，世间万物都具有两面性，进步也不例外。尽管进步使大多数人受益，但我们不应忽视其负面影响，应该采取行动去缓解这些影响。
