Since the invention of computer, diverse advancements have been made in fields related to information and communication technology, which leads to a new norm that we are overwhelmed by explosion of information. Among all kinds of information, advertisements are distinguished or even blatant to some extent. Normally, once we use our social apps on portable devices, it is highly possible that a wide range of advertisements will pop up as to spoil our interests, so that we just kill off them without even having a glance of them. Therefore, here comes the question: is it valuable for companies to make a huge investment on advertising?

As is widely accepted, merchants devolve themselves into propagating their products through diverse media even to the extent that deception can be acceptable. Take the example of some instant noodles as example. It seems that there are large pieces of appetizing beef as well as fleshy vegetables ready to pop out of the packages of instant noodles. Customers are lured to these amazingly advertised instant noodles, and yet when the packages are opened, there are only fragments of dried vegetables and beef. Once they figure out the tricks played by companies involved, they will never put faith in any advertisements or even any businesses trying to use advertisements as its primary marketing strategy. Considering all the evidence, it follows that spending money on exaggerated advertisements can be counterproductive to the achievement of success for a business.

In addition to side-effects of excessively polishing products, advertisements hold no merit in some businesses. Imagine what would happen if there is no limitation in marketing cigarettes. Victims of smoking could not be restricted to adults and the rate of chronic lung diseases or even cancers would soar. Can anyone be utterly indifferent to see others suffering from the torment incurred by diseases? The answer is definitely not and we will spontaneously set resistance of adverting cigarettes in motion, causing a severe blow to companies in this field. Furthermore, due to special properties of certain products, marketing through advertising is not a practical tactic. For example, medical equipment is widely used in hospitals while not available to individuals, leading to that promoting it to the public is ineffective and wasteful.

In general, although we cannot deny the effectiveness of advertisements in common businesses, there is no reason to believe it can be the only approach companies can use to popularize its products and thus boost profits.
