Lets think about population trends in urban and rural areas (villages).Living in urban areas can be expensive; nonetheless, when they have a choice of where to live, people in some countries do not wish to live in rural areas even if the cost of living there is lower. If governments of some countries want to attract more people to live in rural are as or villages, what is the best strategy or approach that governments can use? Why?

Claire

I would live in a rural area if the government gave more financial help to farmers.Although it may cost very little to live in a rural area, it costs a lot to begin a career in agriculture. If I had financial help, I would start my own farm and be happy to live in a rural area.

Kelly

In my country, urban centers are great places to live because you can access shops, restaurants, and museums. If the government of my country wanted to attract me to live in a rural area, the area would first have to attract more businesses focused on entertainment and culture than most rural are as have now.

This week, l want you to discuss assessment criteria. Some schoolteachers give high grades(marks) only to those students who perform well on their homework assignments and tests. Other teachers, however, may give high grades to students who have worked very hard on their assignments but have not performed so well.Which approach do you think is better: Giving grades based only on performance, or grading students not just on performance but also on their effort?

Kelly

l think grades should be based on performance only. It's a matter of fairness.I'd be really upset if another student got nearly the same grade that l did when l turned in work that was almost perfect and the other student's work had incorrect answers or unclear ideas. It wouldn't matter to me if they worked harder.

Paul

Sure, evaluation should mainly be based upon the student's performance, but hard work should count for something.A student who works hard, even when the final grade isn't the highest in the class, builds character, which will benefit the student later in life when they go to university or apply for a job.

Nowadays, the world is facing a number of pressing environmental problems, and over the next few weeks, we'll be discussing various innovations that may help solve these problems. To begin our discussion,I'd like you to think of one global environmental problem—for example, it could be related to water, air, land, climate, biodiversity, energy, or something similar. Then explain what you think would be an effective solution to this problem.

Kelly

One of the major environmental problems is the limited freshwater supply in many areas of the world, which means that we need to find effective technologies to provide people with enough drinking water. One solution is to improve the technology for removing salt from seawater, which could allow us to use seawater to replenish dwindling freshwater supplies.

Paul

l think the biggest problem is the air pollution caused by the overuse of motorized vehicles. The obvious solution is for local governments to promote alternatives, like building bike lanes in cities or improving public transportation with electric buses. Both of these would be easy to implement as well.

This week, we'll look at how well students transition to university. Many recent high school graduates have taken a gap year—a yearlong break after graduation—before studying at a university. During a gap year, students may get jobs, travel, or simply relax and think about their future. Some students say their gap year was beneficial, while others regret having taken one. In your opinion, does taking a gap year create more advantages or disadvantages for students? Why?

Andrew

The gap year would be a good opportunity for students to reflect on their education goals and confirm their plans for university. At least it would give someone time to investigate different fields and get a better sense of what it means to be in business, to work in an office, or to work with their hands, etc.

Claire

Because university can be expensive, students should not take a gap year.Tuition, the cost of books, and living expenses rise every year. The money a student might save during a gap year might not be enough to cover the rise in prices when they enter university a year later.

In our textbook, we read that parks and other green spaces with trees and plants have numerous benefits for people in cities. But city governments sometimes must choose between using a piece of available land as a green space or using it for other important purposes, such as for shopping areas or for manufacturing plants. In your opinion, which is the better use for available urban space? Why?

Kelly

It's true that parks can benefit people in cities, especially health-wise.But it's more important to use the limited space for things that people cannot survive without, like hospitals or clinics. Medical care is often an urgent necessity. Visiting a park is not.

Claire

I'm all for creating green spaces for people to enjoy, but you don't necessarily need an open piece of land to do that.Let the available land be used for business or housing purposes.Green spaces can be created on the rooftops of existing buildings. And new buildings can be constructed creatively to include open spaces with plants and trees.

How to protect the environment in daily lives

Your professor is teaching a class on public administration. Write a post responding

to the professor’s question.

Professor

Professor: As environmental protection develops, more people have come to realize that everybody should play a part in preserving the planet we live on. These years, many people

want to protect and improve the natural environment. In terms of what individuals in their daily lives could do if they want to protect the environment, some put forward walking

or bicycling instead of driving a car to work or school, while others recommend buying locally grown organic foods grown without pesticides, and which one do you think would work better?

Lila:

I think walking or cycling instead of driving works better in reducing carbon emissions. Everybody needs to commute, and a lot of people drive every day. If they can switch to walking or riding bicycles, the outcome of such a collective effort would be considerable.

Steve

Paul: Buying locally grown organic foods is more effective, I think. Growing crops organically means giving up pesticides to get rid of pests, which significantly reduces pollutants that pose great threats to soil and water. Therefore, the food chain could be less contaminated.

Sample Answer:

For individuals to do in their daily lives to protect the environment, I think walking or cycling instead of driving works better than promoting organic foods. Steve did have a point when he talked about how organically grown crops help reduce water and soil pollution. However, he did not see the practicality of the approach. First, organic foods are so much more costly that they are not universally affordable for most people. Besides, organic crop yields are rather small compared to the demand. If organic foods replaced all regular foods, food supplies would be insufficient and people would starve. Lila, by contrast, proposed a much more viable option. In addition to the considerable outcome of the collective effort she mentioned, it is quite feasible. It is true that some people live far away from where they work or go to school, but not everybody does. In fact, quite a number of people live within walking or cycling distance from their workplace or school. Considering the health benefits and the universal lack of exercise nowadays, a lot of people would be fully motivated to do so. In short, walking or cycling instead of driving is a better option than promoting organic foods.

Professor Clarke

Professor:

As discussed in class, the concept of health has evolved over time, and with advancements in technology and medicine, it is often believed that staying healthy is easier in modern times. However, some argue that current lifestyles and environmental factors have made it more challenging to maintain good health. In which period would you argue it is easier for people to stay in a healthy condition—at present or in the past? Why?

Amber:

I would definitely say that it is easier to maintain good health nowadays than in the past. It is important to consider the various factors that contribute to people's health. In the past, access to healthcare was limited and medical knowledge was not as advanced as it is today. Also, people's lifestyles were often less healthy due to factors such as limited access to healthy food and a lack of awareness about the importance of exercise.

Jonah:

I hold a different view from Amber and believe that it was actually easier to stay healthy in the past. Most people led healthier, more active lives in the past so there was no need to go the gym in their spare time. There were far fewer sedentary jobs in those days so there was no obsession to keep fit. Also, in terms of the issue of food and diet, there were far fewer additives and processed foods in the past, meaning that people had healthier diets.

Sample Answer:

I personally would vote for Amber’s opinion. It is true that there are still numerous obstacles to maintaining good health in today's society. For example, factors such as pollution, stress, and the prevalence of unhealthy food options can lead to a wide range of health issues, from obesity to heart diseases. Also, access to quality healthcare remains an enormous challenge for many individuals, particularly those in low-income communities. Despite these challenges, it is important to acknowledge the fact that there have actually been significant advancements in healthcare and medical technology in recent years. Thanks to these advances, an increasing number of people now have access to a broader range of treatments and preventative measures, such as vaccines and screenings. Furthermore, there is a greater emphasis on healthy living, with more and more people taking an active interest in nutrition and exercise. Also, due to the rise of the internet, such information is now at people’s fingertips.

professor’s question.

make a contribution to the discussion in your own words

Professor Davis

Professor:

As we all know, the education system plays a crucial role in shaping the future of any society by providing a strong foundation for the upcoming generations. However, there are different ways of instruction for high school teachers across the nation and this has led to a debate on their merits. Which approach would you argue is better—teacher centered education or student-centered education? Why?

Alisa:

I strongly believe that teacher-centered education is the better approach for high school instruction. In this type of education, the teacher is the expert and the students are there to learn from them. This approach ensures that students receive a comprehensive and structured education that covers all necessary topics. It may seem like a good idea that student-centered education places the focus on the student's interests and preferences, but it often results in a lack of structure and a failure to cover important topics.

Jason:

Unlike Alisa, I strongly believe that student-centered education is the better approach. I mean, this method prioritizes the needs and interests of the students, allowing them to take an active role in their own learning. It is more likely for them to retain information and develop critical thinking skills. Also, such an education promotes collaboration and communication among peers, preparing students for the real world where teamwork is essential. Therefore, I think the student-centered way of instruction is better.

Sample Answer:

I would subscribe to Jason’s idea that student-centered education is much preferable. In addition to the benefits of fostering a supportive community and promoting collaboration, another important point to consider relates to students’ learning preferences and the cultivation of their self-assurance during the learning journey. In a traditional lecture-style approach, the teacher asks questions at the end of the session by choosing students at random. This can be intimidating and daunting, especially if students are unsure of the answer and are expected to speak in front of the entire class. In contrast, group work and discussions provide a more conducive environment for students to build their confidence and knowledge before presenting in front of the class. By engaging in group-based conversations and activities, students would certainly feel more confident to speak to the teacher and the class. Therefore, in comparison with the lecture-style approach, student centered education empowers students to take ownership of their learning and enhances their confidence.
