Your professor is teaching a class on education. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.
In your response, you should
· express and support your personal opinion
· make a contribution to the discussion in your own words
An effective response will contain at least 100 words. You have ten minutes to write.
Doctor Diaz:
In today's context, there's a growing consensus that education should extend beyond high school and college, encompassing lifelong learning. Imagine you're a student engaging with this topic. Your input is sought on which specific field adults should focus on for ongoing education. Given this perspective, the question to you is: Considering the shift towards lifelong education, which field of study do you believe adults should prioritize for their continuous learning journey?
Andrew:
In my opinion, it's important for adults to have the opportunity to take foreign language classes as part of their lifelong education. Learning a new language can open doors to different cultures, enhance communication skills, and boost career prospects. Plus, it's a way to keep our minds active and engaged throughout our lives. So, I believe offering foreign language courses to adults is a valuable way to support their continuous learning journey.
Claire:
I think art classes should definitely be available to adults as part of lifelong education. Engaging in art allows us to express ourselves, relieve stress, and tap into our creativity. Even if someone didn't have the chance to explore art when they were younger, providing these classes to adults can offer them a way to discover new talents, develop new hobbies, and continue growing personally, no matter their age.
It is true that we cannot go so far as to dismiss views held by Andrew and Claire as down-right absurd, but personally speaking, other fields of study also hold merits in this topic. Obviously, the importance of developing digital literacy skills cannot be overstated in today's technologically advanced world. Digital literacy, which refers to the ability to navigate, evaluate, and effectively use digital tools, platforms, and information, ensures a promising prospect in the modern workplace. Regardless of the industry or role, computers, the internet, and digital tools are ubiquitous. From using productivity software to communicating via email and collaborating online, employees are expected to have a basic or even advanced level of digital competency. By developing digital literacy skills, individuals can enhance their efficiency, productivity, and adaptability in the workplace. Of course, we should not be negligent or even indifferent to significant roles art and language play in ongoing education. However, in general, it is no wonder that digital literacy has higher priority over the two stated above.

Doctor Diaz:
Do you think it is a good idea for people who already have a full-time job to pursue advanced degree? Why or why not?
Andrew:
In my opinion, given limited time and energy, it is difficult to strike a balance between study and work.
Claire:
I think the experience obtained through work can be favorable to pursuing further study.
It is true that we cannot go so far as to dismiss views held by Andrew as down-right absurd, but personally speaking, I am of Claire’s overall position. Obviously, in today's competitive job market, acquiring an advanced degree can significantly increase career opportunities. It can open doors to higher-level positions, promotions, and even career shifts. Employers often value individuals who possess both relevant work experience and advanced education, as they bring a unique blend of practical expertise and academic perspectives to the table. Additionally, an advanced degree can provide specialized knowledge, helping individuals stay updated in their industry and adapt to ever-evolving job requirements, leading to a promising prospect for a wider range of career pathways. Of course, we should not be negligent or even indifferent to the intense tension brought about by juggling between two challenging tasks. However, in general, it is no wonder that the upside of working at a full-time job and chasing further study outcompetes its downside.

Doctor Achebe:
As we have been discussed, airplanes emit greenhouse gases and pollute the environment. In order to reduce pollution, the government should impose an additional tax on airplanes and use the tax revenue to develop low-pollution or more environmentally friendly types of transportation. Do you agree? Why?
Andrew:
Imposing additional taxes would encourage passengers to change the types of transportation into more environmentally friendly ones, so this may be helpful to the protection of environment.
Claire:
I don’ t believe it is a good way, because the additional tax means that the airplane companies would increase the price of the ticket and the plane tickets have already been very high. Other methods should be considered instead of the additional taxes.
While imposing additional taxes, as Andrew says, is effective in dissuading people to take airplanes, by contrast, Claire also holds merit in the topic presented by the professor. Obviously, adopting the policy can contribute to environment protection. To be specific, not only can it serve as a deterrent but also, to some extent, conserve the depleting energy, fossil fuel, for the whole society. However, the welcome effects entailed by this tactic will soon vanish, when companies spare no effort to compensate for their monetary loss and successfully bring down the increased price of the ticket. In reality, it is coherently reasonable to believe that rejecting the extra taxes while contriving other ways, such as raising citizen’s environmental awareness, would be constructive to mitigating the negative impacts exerted by emissions from airplanes in the long run. Of course, we cannot deny that being resistant is not airtight, especially when the taxes are charged rationally and moderately, which is imperative in tackling the acute environment problems. In conclusion, considering all the facts laid out above, we should be resilient in taking either side of the argument.

Doctor Achebe:
Many companies provide important products and services but at the same time cause environment damages. Some people believe the way to prevent these companies from damaging the environment is for the government to require more penalties from them, such as higher tax and larger fine. Do you think it is a good idea?
Andrew:
A lot of companies make helpful products but hurt the environment too. I think the government should punish them more, like raising their taxes and fines, to stop the damage. Doing that would hold corporations accountable and force them to change in an impactful way. We can have both innovation and sustainability if governments incentivize it properly through penalties.
Claire:
I disagree that we should penalize corporations more for environmental damage. Many companies are already taking steps to adopt greener practices, and higher taxes or fines could discourage innovation and hurt the economy. Instead of punishing businesses, I believe the government should reward and incentivize sustainable choices through subsidies and tax breaks.
While imposing more penalties, as Andrew says, is effective in dissuading companies to cause further damage to the environment, by contrast, Claire also holds merit in the topic presented by the professor. Obviously, adopting the policy can contribute to environment protection. To be specific, not only can it serve as a deterrent but also, to some extent, encourage companies to adopt more sustainable practices, leading to conservation of natural resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity. However, the welcome effects will soon vanish, when companies spare no effort to evade the fear-based mechanism embedded in this strategy and successfully compensate for their monetary loss. In reality, it is coherently reasonable to believe that rejecting exorbitantly high taxes and penalties while contriving other moderate ways, such as raising citizen’s environmental awareness, would also be constructive to mitigating the negative impacts exerted on the environment from these companies in the long run. Of course, we cannot deny that being firmly resistant is not airtight, especially when the whole society hovers on the brink of collapse in the face of the environmental calamity. In conclusion, considering all the facts laid out above, we should be resilient in taking either side of the argument.

Doctor Achebe:
Which subject do you think is the most important to high school students?
Andrew:
Math can be considered as the base for all the others, so I think math is the most significant subject of all.
Claire:
I think biology is the most important, because it provides us an opportunity to study our body.
While mathematics, as Andrew says, can be deemed as the cornerstone, by contrast, Claire also holds merit in the topic presented by the professor. Admittedly, Math skills can be utilized in various real-world situations, such as managing finances, calculating measurements, analyzing data, and solving problems. In reality, as is generally believed, just as significant is the fact that biology can give us a unique perspective to look into the realm of life and living organisms, which is crucial for developing a comprehensive understanding of the world around us. However, in today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, our life is surrounded by the overwhelming digital information presented by the Internet, platforms and various electric devices. Consequently, personally speaking, it is also imperative for high school students to focus on the development of digital literacy skills, in order to acquire the ability to navigate in this newly-developed landscape. Besides, gaining proficiency in areas such as coding, data analysis, or digital marketing can be incredibly valuable for career opportunities and staying competitive in the job market. In conclusion, when it comes to ranking subjects, the adaptability they can help us to develop is one of the key factors in this process.

Doctor Achebe:
Let's explore the concept of retail and its variations. In the world of retail, there's a unique type where a wide array of products are housed under one roof, allowing for wholesale purchases. This brings us to the idea of super stores. On the other end, we have small stores catering to specific needs. Now, considering these options, which one do you think holds more advantages for people? Would the convenience of super stores outweigh the personal touch of small stores?
Andrew:
In my view, small stores outweigh super stores, mainly due to the emphasis on personalized service and repairs. The direct assistance and expertise offered by small stores are invaluable, especially when it comes to electronics or gadgets that might need fixing. While super stores provide convenience, the hands-on support and tailored solutions from small stores align better with my college experience and budget considerations.
Claire:
In my opinion, super stores hold an edge over small stores due to their wide-ranging product choices, extended hours, and cost-saving options. As a student juggling classes and activities, the convenience of finding everything under one roof and the potential for bulk discounts make superstores a practical choice. While small stores offer a personal touch, the efficiency and budget-friendly nature of super stores align better with my busy college lifestyle.
It is true that we cannot go so far as to dismiss the view held by Claire Andrew as down-right absurd, but personally speaking, I am of Claire’s overall position. Obviously, services provided in a super store can contribute to a better shopping experience. Through offering extended operating hours, spacious parking lots, and user-friendly layouts, super stores are designed to provide convenience to shoppers, which can be further enhanced by online shopping and home delivery services furnished by retailing giants for busy city dwellers. Take the example of the shopping app developed by Metro. It enables customers to easily locate products intended to buy through several simple steps, then with a few clicks, the order is placed and what they have to do next is to wait for it to be delivered at their home. Of course, in some cases, where some individuals gravitate to specialty items to meet their distinct tastes, small stores might be a better option. However, in general, it is no wonder that shopping in a super store has higher priority than in a small store.

Doctor Achebe:We've been discussing government budgets and the difficult decisions governments must make regarding the use of public funds. Some services are clearly essential and must be paid for by any government. But what about public funding of the arts? Do you believe that governments should offer financial support to artists-for example, painters, sculptors, musicians, or filmmakers? Why or why not?
Claire: I enjoy art as much as anyone does, but public funds come from taxes, and I don't think taxpayers' hard-earned money should be spent on impractical or inessential items and services. Artists should support themselves by selling their work to private individuals and companies. If they can't find enough buyers, then maybe they should change careers.
Paul: Personally, I think art actually is essential. Lots of public spaces in my hometown just wouldn't be the same without artwork. From statues in public parks to murals painted on the walls of government buildings, my hometown really benefits from funding the artists who created these works. The public spaces are simply more enjoyable for visitors because of the artwork.
I’m on board with Paul’s idea that artists should be financially supported by governments since the artwork produced by these talented people makes public spaces more attractive. Besides that, I hold the notion that using revenues to support artists helps stimulate the economy. Obviously, the primary reason is that when the government fund artistic endeavors, such as art exhibitions and festivals, visitors from near and far will be attracted to go on a cultural tour, which means that the local economy will be boosted by visitors spending money on accommodation, transportation and local businesses. By contrast, if governments limit financial supports to artists, it will have a ripple effect on the economic development, due to the fact that artists may struggle to sustain their livelihood and be unable to create art that can attract tourists. Therefore, I am of the opinion that governments should invest in artists since the local economy can benefit from such investments.
