The reading passage criticizes the effectiveness of turtle excluder devices while the listening thinks the criticism proposed in the reading passage is actually invalid.

First, the passage contends that compared with the rare chance of catching a turtle, the cost of losing shrimps is too high. However, based on the listening, although catching a turtle is a rare a thing, there are thousands of shrimp boats operating along the coast. Collectively, those boats can accidentally catch thousands of turtles a year, which are endangered species. Therefore, considering the impact that shrimpers can have on the turtle population as a whole, TEDs are still very necessary.

Secondly, the reading believes that shortening the time limit in keeping the nets under water is a better way to protect turtles, but the listening thinks it works only in theory. There are thousands of shrimp boats out at sea and the government patrol boats cannot really monitor the time limits of all boats. However, using TEDs is much easier. What is required is to check the shrimp boasts before they leave ports to see if their nets have TEDs.

Finally, the reading contends that TEDs are sometimes useless for large sea turtles to escape. In this regard, the lecturer asserts that although it is true, it is not a problem to create TEDs larger. Since the design of the TED can be modified easily without affecting the way it functions, the problem mentioned in the reading not long exists with larger TEDs produced.

In today’s society, people have many things to attend to, including working from nine to five, participating in social activities, and taking care of their family. This leads many to conclude that people cannot do all the things well at the same time. However, from my perspective, people are able to do things well even though they are very busy.

First of all, the advances in science and technology make it possible for people to finish their tasks perfectly. With the help of advanced technology, people are able to solve problems more efficiently, enabling them to achieve desirable results. For example, for university students who have various plans on their calendar, they can definitely use technology. To be specific, when they have difficulties writing their term papers, they can search for materials related to their field of study using search engines such as Google. Moreover, when they are preparing for job interviews, they can find information on the Internet about how to dress properly and how to answer interview questions. Besides, if they need to finish a presentation, they can make the slides more vivid and appealing by incorporating images and video clips. Therefore, even though students have all kinds of tasks, they still are able to accomplish them with high quality thanks to advanced technology.

Furthermore, the larger social circle enables people to do their job well. Having a larger social network, people are able to ask for help when they encounter difficulties, thereby being able to do their work well. My friend Emma’s experience will better illustrate this idea. When Emma was applying for graduate school, she planned to visit some of the universities in the U.S. to see if she liked the facilities and the neighborhoods. However, she was really busy preparing her resume, personal statement and writing samples. Fortunately, one of her high school friends, Sam, was in New York, and Sam visited Columbia University and New York University, taking a lot of photos and talking to some staff members. After learning about the two universities from Sam, Emma chose to apply to New York University, because she liked the location and the social activities she was able to take part in. Thus, it is the assistance from friends that provides people with opportunities to do things well.

In conclusion, although people in contemporary society have to deal with so many things, they still are able to handle them perfectly because of the help of high technology and their friends.
