The reading passage presents three explanations for the extinction at the end of the Triassic period. However, in the listening, the professor points out that the theories in the reading might sound plausible, but none of them is a good explanation for the extinction.

First of all, the reading material points out that the change of sea levels led to the extinction. On the contrary, the professor argues that even though scientists agree that the sea level often went down, this is not a good explanation for the extinction. This is because coastal and shallow ecosystems can adapt to environmental changes that happen gradually. Moreover, the change of sea level at the end of the Triassic period was actually very gradual, taking several million years. The change had to be much more sudden to cause the extinction.

Besides, the professor casts doubt on the reading’s idea that the cooling of global temperature contributed to the mass extinction. The professor supports the argument by the fact that sulfur dioxide will influence temperature only in a relatively short period of time when the sulfur dioxide is still in the atmosphere. However, after a few years, the excess SO2 will be cleared out of the atmosphere. SO2 often combines with water and falls back on earth as rain. Thus, even though there was much volcanic SO2 in the atmosphere, it did not stay long enough to cause the extinction.

Finally, the professor argues against the reading’s statement that asteroid strike is one of the reasons of the extinction. The professor explains this idea by pointing out that they did not find any crater where the asteroid hit that can be dated back to the time when the extinction happened. Furthermore, they did find a crater, but it was dated back to 12 million years before the extinction. That is too long before the extinction to have anything to do with it.

Everybody wants to find a job that can ensure a secure and promising future, but sometimes it is difficult to decide which position is the best. There are those who hold the view that it is easier to identify a secure job with more promotion opportunities than it was in the past. However, I believe identifying a desirable position was easier a few decades ago.

First of all, the different sources of information in contemporary society makes it impossible for people to know which job is better. Information from all kinds of news sources and media makes it difficult for people to distinguish right from wrong, which gives people trouble in finding the perfect job. My friend Emma’s experience can better illustrate this idea. When Emma was hunting for jobs, she tried to look for job advertisements on newspapers as well as on the Internet. She found a piece of advertisement that said working as programmers promises stability and future development. However, just as she was about to apply for a programmer position at Google, she read another piece of news on BBC, explaining that it will be difficult for young people to find a position in technology companies because of the fierce competition. As a result, she still does not know if working as a programmer is the right choice. Therefore, how is it possible for people to make sure which job will be more stable if they are overwhelmed by information?

Furthermore, people nowadays are unable to identify a perfect job because of the rapid change of society. With the changing of people’s needs and the requirements of companies, the jobs that are popular today might not be popular tomorrow. In this case, finding a suitable job is almost impossible. For instance, in big cities in China, a gym coach can make a lot of money, because people nowadays pay more attention to their health and how they look. However, only a couple of years ago when few people went to the gym and worked out regularly, being a coach would not give a person the opportunity to be financially successful. Moreover, People who had their own store and sold clothes a few years ago may not make much fortune today, since people are more willing to purchase products online. However, a few decades ago, when the job market was relatively stable, people knew what type of jobs could provide them with success. Thus, it is the fast-changing society that makes it hard for people to look for a desirable position.

In conclusion, it was easier for people to decide what kind of jobs would guarantee a better future.
