  adaptable

  能适应的

It turns out that plant-pollinator relationships are more adaptable to change than we thought.

  beetle

  甲虫

With half an inch of rain per year, the beetle can only survive by consuming the dew it collects on the hydrophilic skin of its back in the early mornings.

  coincide with

  与… 同时发生

Let’s start with flowers, there’re several important factors associated with pollination: when and how often to plant flowers, how long the flowering cycle lasts, and the number of flowers that open at the same time. For example, flowering may coincide with the migration of a certain animal species that pollinates the plant, or producing many flowers at once may increase the number of pollinators a plant attracts.

  delicate relationship

  微妙的关系

These factors help drive the evolution of the plants and their pollinators, both of which depend on this balanced and delicate relationship.

  dispersal

  分散;传播

It can fragment habitats in a variety of ways: reducing the number of pollinators, which in return may reduce the number or size of the flowers, which of course affect the animals that feed on them, uh, exotic plant species not native to the area can move in and compete, even bees brought in to pollinate crops can alter natural pollen dispersal systems of rainforest plants.

  exotic plant species

  外来植物物种

"It was very surprising to find such a strong correlation between the number of native and exotic plant species on islands around the world, " Sax said.

  flowering cycle

  花期

Complete ripening for the sugar, tannins and skins was only achieved 125 days after flowering – a vegetative cycle longer than usual in a year with 13 lunar cycles

  fragrant

  芬芳的

When the beetle flies out, it carries the pollen to a different heated, white, fragrant flower.

  fragment

  (使成为)碎片

To do this we create an information context list from the XML fragment.

  nectar

  花蜜

"Almost all were incorrectly labeled based on their pollen and nectarcontents, " he said

  pollinate

  对… 授粉

Scientists at the University of Virginia recently reported that air pollution may prevent bees from finding flowers to pollinate.

  pollen

  花粉

When a beetle arrives at the flower, the flower closes around it for about 24 hours, so that the beetle becomes covered with pollen.

  pollinator

  传粉者

Other characteristics of flowers are also important: features such as color, scent and shape attract pollinators as does the reward in the flower, the pollen and the nectar that feeds the pollinator.

  scent

  气味

My dog snuffed the scent of games.

  visibility

  能见度,可见性

For example, flowers that attract bats tend to be green or cream colored, because visibility isn’t important—bats are practically blind, remember.
