  科学美国人60秒听力练习:Appointment in Abbottabad

  科学美国人60秒英文文本

The story is called Appointment in Samarra. ABaghdad merchant sends a servant to buyprovisions. While at the market, the servant bumpsinto Death, who makes a threatening gesture. Theservant races back to the merchant, borrows a horseand flees to the city of Samarra for safety.

The Somerset Maughan version of the old fableabout fate continues, with Death narrating: “Thenthe merchant went down to the marketplace and hesaw me standing in the crowd and he came to meand said, ‘Why did you make a threatening gestureto my servant when you saw him this morning?’ ‘That was not a threatening gesture,’ I said, ‘it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I had anappointment with him tonight in Samarra.’”

I was reminded of this story by a detail in the accounts of the killing of Osama Bin Laden: hisopulent hiding place had no telephone or Internet service. Presumably to minimize the risk ofrevealing his location through contact with the outside world. But the very lack of such moderntechnology, intended to avoid attention, attracted it instead. And enabled authorities to keeptheir long-standing appointment.
