综合写作 鸟类
主题:海燕petrels面临的威胁和对应的解决方案
阅读
First, petrels are threatened by nonnative predators, including cats. Humans have brought large numbers of domesticated cats to areas of petrel habitat, such as the Hawaiian Islands, where no native cats existed in the past. Over the years, many of those cats were abandoned or escaped into the wild, where they essentially became invasive predators, threatening the native petrels. Petrels are particularly vulnerable to cat predation because they nest in burrows (small holes) in the ground, where they can be easily reached by cats.
Second, as human populations near petrel habitats have grown, the amount of artificial light near petrel nests has also increased. Petrels are attracted to light, so artificial light sources such as brightly lit buildings can cause them to become confused and leave their normal flight paths. Petrels that fly toward artificial lights may collide with buildings, and especially with windows, often getting seriously injured or killed. The threat that artificial lights pose to petrels is particularly troubling, since people living near petrel habitats cannot be expected to completely stop lighting their homes and businesses to protect birds.
Finally, petrels are further threatened by fishing bycatch. Bycatch is the accidental capture of species that fishers are not targeting, such as sea turtles or seabirds, in fishing gear. Petrels feed on fish, and the fish that accumulate in and around fishing nets are an attractive food source for the seabirds. In attempting to access these fish, however, petrels can become entangled in fishing nets. It is estimated that fishing bycatch results in many petrel deaths every year.

First, we can prevent predators from accessing petrels, nesting sites. For example, scientists have designed specialized fences called conservation fences that surround petrol's nesting sites and keep predators such as cast away from those areas. These conservation fences are about two meters high and curve outward at the top. Now, cats can obviously jump quite high and climb over obstacles. That's why the scientists made these fences two meters high, higher than most cats can. Also, the top of the fence curves outward, away from the area that the fence encloses. Which makes it impossible for cats to climb over these fences.
And protecting petrels from artificial light is actually possible. That's because people will only need to turn off their lights temporarily during a particular season. You see, most petrels that get confused by artificial lights are young birds learning to fly. And young petrels leave the nest and learn to fly during the same season every year. So local governments can inform the public when young petrels begin flying so that people will know when to turn off their lights. And that's not all. Local governments can even pass laws prohibiting excessive light use in the season when young petrels begin flying, such measures will encourage people to protect petrels.
Finally, fishers can help reduce by catch by simply adjusting their fishing schedules and techniques. You see, fishers typically fish during the day, and petrels also search for fish during the day. Are most in danger of getting caught in fishing nets when fishers place the nets in the water. And also when fishers bring the nets back onto the boat, so if fishers agree to place their nets in the water at night, leave them in the water for an extended time, and then bring the nets back onto the boat only the following night. This will greatly reduce the chance of harmony petrels.

Doctor Achebe: Today, we are going to discuss an emerging work arrangement known as job sharing. Job sharing is a type of employment in which one full-time position can be shared two part-time workers that is, the two people share the work hours, and pay of one job. For example, two part-time accountants share one full-time accounting position, splitting the responsibilities of the position. Do you think the job-sharing arrangement is a positive trend? Why or why not?
Kelly: I'm not sure job sharing is a good idea. l think it would be too confusing for employers to keep track of who is working on which day or who is responsible for certain projects. Coworkers who have questions about certain projects would also get confused about which person to address their questions to.
Paul: I think job sharing can lead to more fulfilling lives for a lot of people. Many workers want to continue developing their careers but don't want to spend so much time working full-time jobs. Some people want to spend time developing their hobbies or taking classes, for example. Job sharing could be very convenient for their schedules.

Climate Changes
Some scientists believe that the decrease in human brain size is a result of the decrease in the overall size of the human body, which has been caused by changes in Earth's climate. Over the past 20,000 years Earth's climate has experienced a warming trend. Generally, warmer climate favors smaller body size: therefore, as Earth's climate warmed, the size of the human body decreased and the size of the human brain decreased with it.
Agriculture
Other researchers believe that agricultural lifestyle contributed to decreased brain size. Our ancestors’ large brains needed large quantities of proteins and vitamins to remain healthy, After the agricultural revolution, people's diets consisted mostly of grains, but grains are lower in proteins and vitamins than non-agricultural diets. People with slightly smaller brains had an advantage: they were not as affected by the low-protein diet. Overtime, they became the majority.
Decrease in Muscle Mass
According to a third theory, the smaller size of the human brain reflects the fact that humans today have smaller muscles than humans did 20,000 years ago. This is important because much of the brain is used to control muscles. As humans became less muscular, the parts of the brain that controlled muscles also became smaller, resulting in an overall reduction in brain size.

Doctor Achebe: This week in class we are learning about different methods of advertising and their effectiveness. One advertising strategy that companies often use is to ask celebrities, famous entertainers or sports figures to promote their products. However, some experts believe that it is more effective to have ordinary people talk about the product. Which of these two advertising strategies do you think is better?
Kelly: I like the "ordinary people" approach. People are more interested in a product when they see people like themselves using the product. I think this is even true for clothing advertisements, which traditionally use famous models. People get a better idea of whether they like the clothes when they sell kinds of different people wearing them, and not just models.
Paul: I think the use of celebrities is really effective. The first thing an advertisement must do is grab viewers' attention. When a famous actor or sports figure appears in your advertisement, viewers first notice the celebrity, "what's this? I really like that person." they think. Then, once you have the viewers, you can provide information about your product.
范文:
I fully support Kelly's argument that ordinary-person advertising yields greater effectiveness. As consumers grow increasingly savvy, they prioritize genuine utility over celebrity-driven hype. People recognize that athletes or models achieve success through talent and genetics—not by using endorsed vitamins or luxury products. This awareness explains declining trust in celebrity promotions. Conversely, peer recommendations resonate more powerfully because they reflect relatable experiences. For instance, realizing I’ll never attain a model’s physique, I sought clothing reviews from individuals with similar body types. Following their advice, I switched from uncomfortable skinny jeans to mobility-friendly skirts, resulting in a satisfying purchase. Such authenticity drives my consistent preference for ads featuring real users. Ultimately, as educated consumers demand transparency, celebrity influence diminishes. Strategies showcasing ordinary people not only align with this shift but also build lasting trust, ensuring sustained success in an era where relatability trusses aspirational yet disconnected endorsements.

Doctor Achebe: Next week, we'll examine some challenges that managers face. One challenge is determining how much independence employees should have. Consider this: many managers give employees the freedom to set their own working hours. For example, an employee might choose to start the workday earlier than is typical. But other managers do not allow flexible schedules, arguing that they create problems. In industries where flexible work schedules are possible. Do you think this policy would bring more benefits than adversities?
Kelly: I think job sharing provides employees with the flexibility they need to fulfill various responsibilities outside of work, such as taking care of their children, pursuing further education, or participating in personal endeavors. This arrangement allows individuals to have more control over their time and commitments, ultimately leading to greater overall well-being.
Paul: Well, I don’t think so. Effective communication is crucial for successful job sharing. However, maintaining consistent and clear communication between part-time workers can be challenging when they have different schedules or limited overlap at the workplace. For example, if two employees share customer service responsibilities in a retail store, gaps in communication due to different work schedules can result in delayed responses, inconsistent information, and customer dissatisfaction
