Task 1: Suppose you need to take part in some volunteer work to make your school campus more beautiful. Which of the following three do you prefer to do?

  1. planting in campus flowers garden

  2. picking up garbage and collect the recyclable material

  3. painting pictures on walls

Well, I prefer to pick up garbage and collect the recyclable material for two reasons.

First, a litter-strewn campus can do no good but spoil the mood of studying. For example, you arrive early at school on a summer morning to read English loud walking around on the playground. but you get constantly attacked by mosquitoes and flies fed by the rain water in the used lunch boxes in the corner. How can you concentrate any longer?

Second, a neat and clean campus will attract more students. For example, I am one of the students who took a fancy to the school I am in right now because of its fantastic environment. Since I always hold the conviction that school with a appealing environment really can help its students achieve more.

Task 2: Do you agree or disagree that important business meetings should be held face-to-face rather than doing video conference calls or telephone calls.

I disagree that important business meetings should be held face-to-face rather than doing video conference calls or telephone calls for two reasons.

First, it is time-saving. We all know time is money nowadays, especially in business world. Market goes with unexpected ups and downs, so business decisions should be made timely and accurately in important business meetings with the help of video conference or telephone calls.

Second, it is economical. Companies can stand a better chance of surviving and thriving once they get the management cost like meetings under control. For example, business entities, like fresh startups will get by on its low revenue by relying on the advent of video conference or telephone calls to hold important meetings to save money.

  Task 1:

Which of the following characteristics do you think would be the most important for a person who is going to start a new small business?

  A. being outgoing and friendly

  B. being creative and imaginative

  C. being well organized

The benefit of using social websites is that I can post pictures and create videos about myself on my front page. For instance, by using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, I can share my status like what is going on in my life with my friends and family. Thus, social websites help others knows me well. However, the disadvantage is that it can be addictive. Sometimes people may spend much time on social media which distract us from academic work. Also, staring at the screen for a long time will hurt your eyesight and cause myopia, and it can lead to other problems like backache, neck problems, and even obesity.

  Task 2:

Do you agree or disagree that it is not good for children to know too soon about life’s difficulties. Give specific reasons to support your answer.

From my perspective, I think it is ok to ask some influential people to find jobs, because it can enhance your chance of getting the job. These people might know vacancies in different companies, so you can have more work choices, and maybe they can write up the reference letter for you, which can definitely enhance your job competition.

Moreover, there is nothing shameful to use your social connections to find jobs. Using influential people doesn't mean you have to bribe them to get the job. Actually, these people might know vacancies in different companies. When you interview with the company, they will still decide whether they should recruit you or not based on your advantages and qualifications. Thus, you are still playing a fair game.

Task 1: Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of not using social media

Speaking of not using social media, the bright side is definitely to help people get rid of online addiction. Students become easily attached to social networks nowadays, such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and so on. They should stop wasting precious learning time on that.

However, if they don’t use social media anymore, they won’t have access to further their study by exploring online, since they may have limited resources and time in school. We all know how much it can help to collect useful information online, especially in some academic topics.

  Task 2:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

It is acceptable for someone to use other’s influence to get a job.

From my perspective, it seems to be a bad idea to use other’s influence to get a job. I have two reasons to say so.

First of all, even if you are one of the few people who are able to get positions through a friend or family member, you could run into a great deal of trouble, or even harm your relationship with that person in the process.

What's more, your future coworkers and leaders, they might consider you less qualified in your position, if they learn about the fact that you get the job through other’s help. It’s hard to work without trust from your colleagues.

Task 1: One of your friends plan to take more classes than everyone else every semester so he could graduate earlier. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing so?

The most remarkable advantage is money. One is that this choice may help his parents save one year’s tuition. Another is that he may find a job earlier than his classmates, then he may get his own salary, and he can use his own income to buy whatever clothes he likes to wear and eat whatever food he likes.

The disadvantage is he may lose one-year relaxing time. Studying inside campus, he doesn't have to care about salary, whether his service well satisfies his customer and his supervisor. Graduating in advance, he may have to bear the pressure from living independently as an adult.

Task 2: Your university is now considering allowing people in the community to come into the classrooms and take the classes. They can sit and study, but they will not take exams and will not receive credits. Do you think this is a good idea?

In terms of this program, I really don’t think it is a reasonable option.

For one thing, this choice may not be good for undergraduates who are actually taking the classes for credits or grades. Those auditing students may not be well prepared; they may ask basic questions and even slow down the pace of class discussion.

For another thing, this choice may increase the workload of professors. If adding those auditing students in class, professors may have to prepare extra handouts, learn extra names or possibly answer those students’ questions and so on. All these will distract professors’ attention.
