主题:using bacteria to clean up oil spills

  1. One of the critics' concerns is that abacterial population, dramatically increasedby feeding on an oil spill, will stay in the areaafter the spill is cleaned up. The bacteria could1. First, it's very unlikely that the bacteria willcome to dominate the ocean ecosystem afterthe spill is cleaned up. These bacteria haveevolved to feed on one thing, oil Theycome to dominate the area, competing withnative plants and animals for food andsunlight, The negative environmental effectsof this could be significant.naturally thrive only in ocean habitats thatcontain oil from natural sources in an oil spillsituation. Once the bacteria have brokendown the oil into harmless chemicals, theyquickly die off since their main food sourcecrude oil has been depleted2. Second, bacteria at the oil spill site mustbe given extra nutrients (such as nitrogenand phosphorus) in order to grow reproduce, and do their job at an efficient rate. Theproblem is that the extra nutrients can leakoutside of the area affected by the spill, andthey may attract and feed other marineorganisms. This can result in extremely rapidpopulation growth among the otherorganisms, upsetting the balance of marineecosystems near the spill.2. Second, it's true that nutrients used tosupport oil-eating bacteria might upset thebalance of the ecosystem. However, you haveto compare this risk with the damage that iscertain to take place in the ecosystem. If wefail to use bacteria and rely on moretraditional methods of cleaning up oil spills, the traditional methods are pretty slow andllow toxic oil to sit in the ecosystem longenough to wipe out much of the life in it. Thisdamage is typically long lasting. Bycomparison, damage caused by an excess is typically not as great. And theaffected ecosystem reestablishes its oldbalance faster.3. Third, if oil-transporting companies start tobelieve bacteria can cheaply and efficientlyclean up oil spills, they might start to pay lessattention to spill prevention. This could leadto spills becoming more frequent. Morefrequent spills could cause lastingenvironmental damage because someharmful oil components are too complex forthe bacteria to break down, and theseomponents remain in the ocean even after abacterial cleanup.3. Finally, I' pretty sure oil transportingcompanies will remain very careful aboutpreventing spills, even though the bacteriacan make the cleanup of the spill faster andcheaper, there are other costs the companieshave to cover when a spill occurs. Forexample, millions may have to be spentcompensating local fisheries for the timethey cannot fish in the affected waters. Theremay be other penalties and payments tocompensate for potential loss of tourism anddamage to other industries in the area. Sothe companies will still have plenty ofmotivation to keep very strict safetyprecautions to prevent oil spills.

Doctor Diaz: Professor: Ensuring that high school students get the education theyneed is challenging. Some educators are recognizing that regularclasses at school may not be enough to prepare students for careersand for life. Because of this, they recommend that all high schoolstudents be required to spend a specific number of hours learninguseful skills outside school. Others think that this requirement is notappropriate for all students. Which view do you agree with? why?

Andrew: I believe it's crucial to require high school students to learn skillsoutside the classroom. Many essential life and career skills, such asfinancial literacy or coding, are not sufficiently covered in schoolcurriculums. By mandating such experiences, students will be betterprepared for future challenges.

Claire: While additional skills are valuable, forcing students to learn outsidechool can create unnecessary pressure. Not allstudents have the time or resources to pursue extra learning. Educationshould focus on providing a balanced, well- rounded curriculum thatsupports students' individualinterests and allows them to grow at their own pace.

  范文:

It is important to recognize that not all students should be forced to learn additional skillsbeyond the school curriculum. While it is beneficial for some students to pursue extracurricularactivities or develop specialized skills, it is not necessary or practical for every student to do so.One of the reasons for this is that the school curriculum is already designed to provide studentswith a well-rounded education that covers a wide range of subjects and skills. Forcing studentsto learn additional skills on top of their already demanding workload can lead to burnout andoverwhelm. It is important to prioritize the mental and emotional well-being of students byallowing them to focus on their core academic subjects and interests. Personally, I haveexperienced the pressure to learn additional skills beyond the school curriculum. When I wasin high school, I was encouraged to join various clubs and activities in order to build my resumeand stand out to colleges. While I did enjoy some of these extacurricular activities, I also feltoverwhelmed and stretched thin trying to balance my academic workload with my othercommitments. In the end, I realized that it was more important for me to focus on my academicstudies and personal interests in order to excel and feel fulfilled. In conclusion, It is importantto recognize and respect each student's individual strengths and interests, and to prioritizetheir well-being and academic success. By allowing students to focus on what truly matters tothem, we can help them thrive and reach their full potential
